Is a Terrier breed right for you and your family?

OK, right up front... A terrier might not be the right dog for you. Each type of dog has it's own characteristics.

Terriers are very curious, energetic, intelligent and feisty dogs. They can range in size from the Cairn and West Highland White to the King of terriers the Airedale. While not starting fights they are not afraid to finish one. If not trained with a fairly firm hand they may even become hyperactive when older. Fear not however, they are a constant friend and very loyal and protective.

Some Terrier breeds are not advised in families with small children and animals. Male Terriers of some breeds are very aggressive with other male dogs. An older Terrier may not do well in a home that already has other pets. While loyal to the bone, Terriers are very territorial. Some Terriers yip & yap and some of the larger ones have deep voices. If not trained correctly or if left alone for long periods of time a Terrier will find a way to entertain himself. This sometimes results in quite destructive behavior.

Terriers have a wiry coat which requires grooming to keep their distinctive looks. This can either be done by Stripping if for show or more often by clipping. Some of the breeds shed very little and one the American Hairless Terrier is even hypo allergenic. Some need a proffesional groomer who knows what he/she is doing so as not to ruin the coat.

Please use the resources on this site to decide if a Terrier is right for you and your family. Look at this site and others I will point out to you. Get a good book on the different types of dogs. If you have decided to get a terrier do some research on the breeders you visit. The best of the breeders usually have an extensive process to make sure you know about the dog you have decided to get and that you know about any peculiarities of the breed.

I can't emphasize enough... a good breeder is your best resource. For goodness sakes do your homework and don't make a mistake you may have to live with for at least 12 to 15 years of the life of the dog.

A puppy can steal your heart when you see that cute little ball of fur and those big soulful eyes. But that little cutie may grow up to be a real terror if you don'tt consider all the factors before making your decision.

With that said, I hope you decide that a Terrier is the perfect companion for you and your family. Your life will certainly be merrier for it.

History of the breeds...

Terriers were developed by the common people, usually farmers and miners who needed a dog that would root out varmints and keep the property free of pests. Man and dog were more closely attached throughout the history of both our species than they are today. Dogs originally were allowed our campfires because they were good at warning us of danger.

As men became specialized in their work so did the dogs they worked with... Read More...
